Young woman charged with drugs. Future at risk. All charges dropped.

Lewis Gainor defended a young suburban woman in criminal charges of possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia. The young woman was driving in the northern suburbs of Chicago in Lake Villa when a police officer pulled her over. She was in a car with a young man who was in a dispute with another motorist. That motorist called the police to have the young woman arrested. It happens that the other motorist was a woman who had an axe to grind with her over an ex-boyfriend.
The Lake Villa police officers pulled the young woman over. They put her into handcuffs and searched her car. They found a glass pipe and a bag of marijuana. The prosecution pressed charges.

A conviction for drug possession would have caused the young woman trouble with her student loan for college. Her father came to Lewis Gainor's office in person to ask if her could defend his daughter. In no small sense, her future was on the line.

I believe it is vitally important for your attorney to be knowledgeable not just about criminal law, but also about the consequences of a criminal conviction on important issues in your life. For example, if your attorney can't tell you what will happen to your student loan because of your drug case, you've got a serious problem." - Lewis Gainor
Lewis Gainor took her case. He reviewed the facts and the law. He filed a pretrial motion to have the case thrown out. He demanded that the case be dismissed because the police had violated his client's rights.
The case came up for hearing on October 3, 2006. The prosecution could not prove that the police had complied with the law. The case was dismissed. Lewis Gainor shook the hand of the young woman's father, and the father expressed his gratitude.
Lewis Gainor is happy to report that the young woman is expected to graduate from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana with a baccalaureate degree. She has plans to begin working in the Chicago area.
